Vactrol PiLL
Vactrol and PLL noise maker
Panel · 20.3 × 128.5 mm
Description
A simple circuit for a wide range of sounds, named after its two main parts: a vactrol, whose light-controlled resistor always lags as it changes (as Buchla exploited), and a 4046 phase-locked loop, with its VCO, logic gate and phase detector. Driven by a sequencer it is a crude VCO; fed envelopes and LFOs it sounds like anything from a baboon to a cheesy 80s video-game laser cannon. The white and gold panel has no hole for its LED.
