Mackey-Glass chaos and an eight-stage CV phaser

Nonlinearcircuits · 8 HP · 3U

Panel · 40.6 × 128.5 mm

Description

A chaos module after the Mackey-Glass equations, written to show the delay in physiological systems producing or reducing cells as their concentration varies: a very complex and easily controlled chaotic pattern. In electronics, a nonlinear stage, a low pass stage and a delay stage in a loop; here the delay is eight sub-audio Bessel filters under LDR control, much like an eight-stage phase shifter, each with its output on the panel. PHASE, with its CV, sets the chaos' frequency; CHAOS changes its pattern. It runs on its own with nothing patched (it may pause with CHAOS fully up), and an external input injects signals into the chaos. With the switch at CV PHASER, the filters and the FEEDBACK knob make a voltage-controlled CV phaser: eight slightly delayed, increasingly slewed versions of the CV; FEEDBACK works in that mode only.

Key features

  • IN and CV in; eight outputs, 1 to 8, one per Bessel stage
  • IN, CHAOS, PHASE, PHASE CV and FEEDBACK knobs; a CHAOS / CV PHASER toggle
  • Eight LEDs in a ring
  • 8 HP; Nonlinearcircuits publishes no current draw, depth or assembled price (it sells the DIY PCB and panel), and ModularGrid lists none
